Muskeg Lake Cree Nation band council declared a state of emergency on Friday in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
An emergency plan is now in place. That includes closing roads in the community except for emergency or essential travel.
Checkpoints will be placed at various entrances in the community that may prohibit people from entering the community if they are considered a risk due to COVID-19, a media release said.
In a letter signed by Muskeg Lake Cree Nation Chief Kelly Wolfe, the state of emergency will remain in effect until it is formally lifted by Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, which will happen once public health officials inform the Cree nation that any immediate and significant threats have passed.
Updates and information will be provided on Muskeg Lake’s Facebook page and website.
Muskeg Lake Cree Nation is located approximately 100 kilometres north of Saskatoon with roughly 2,000 people located in the area.
